Home, motorcar, servants, the latest fashions: man-about-town Gaston (Louis Jourdan) offers them all to Gigi (Leslie Caron). But she, who transforms from girlish gawkiness to cultured glamour before our eyes, yearns for something money can’t buy. Director Vicente Minnelli (An American in Paris, Meet Me in St. Louis) and a cast rife with Gallic charm join for this lavish, richly photographed musical set in turn-of-the-century Paris—winner of 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director and Music. Its songs from Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe (My Fair Lady) sparkle like “The Night They Invented Champagne” or caress with title-tune tenderness. Maurice Chevalier, who sings “I Remember It Well” to Hermione Gingold, also performs “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” and “I’m Glad I’m Not Young Anymore.”
