Winner of the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film at the Tribeca Film Festival, The Divine Order is set in Switzerland in 1971 where, despite the worldwide social upheavals of the previous decade, women are still denied the right to vote. Unassuming and dutiful housewife Nora (Marie Leuenberger, Best Actress award winner at Tribeca) lives in a small Alpine town; she loves her husband and their two boys, but she is bored stiff washing socks. When she tells her husband that she would like to get a part-time job he forbids it—and has the legal right to!—causing her to take an interest in the women’s suffrage movement. Reluctantly becoming the local leader of the cause brings her scorn, threats and friction in her marriage. But refusing to back down, Nora convinces the women of her town to go on strike...and makes a few startling discoveries about her own liberation. Hilarious, uplifting and crowd-pleasing, this captivating film is a time-capsule that could not be more timely. Switzerland’s Official Selection for Best Foreign Language Film consideration at the 90th Academy Awards. (Fully subtitled, except for some brief spoken English)
