Though from completely different worlds, Sarah (Sivane Kretchner), an Israeli café owner living in West Jerusalem, and Saleem (Adeeb Safadi), her Palestinian bread vendor and deliveryman who lives in East Jerusalem, have a clandestine affair. Just being seen together in public arouses suspicion, and a risky late-night tryst brings them to police attention. Saleem is arrested and tries to free himself by telling dangerous lies. A not uncommon betrayal takes on an entirely sinister new twist as Israeli and Palestinian authorities misread the writing on the wall. Both of their spouses are drawn in: Sarah’s controlling army officer husband and Saleem’s pregnant wife Bisan (Maisa Abd Elhadi), who begins to take more charge of her life. Muayad Alayan’s gripping psychological thriller, handsomely shot in widescreen, is filled with dark, entirely believable intrigue that gives new meaning to the adage the personal is political. Produced by two brothers, director Muayad and screenwriter Rami Musa Alayan, based on true events. Winner of the Audience Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. (Fully subtitled)
