Visionary writer/director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, The New World, The Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven) makes a triumphant return with A Hidden Life. Based on real events, the deeply-felt biographical drama is the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl, Inglourious Basterds), who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. An ordinary Austrian farmer in a remote, idyllic mountain village, Franz lives happily with his wife and children, seemingly far from the fray, amid breathtaking vistas of natural splendor. But when he is required to take an oath of allegiance to Hitler, Franz refuses, holding fast to what he believes is right, when all around him comply. Faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife Fani (Valerie Pachner, The Ground Beneath My Feet) and children that keeps his spirit alive.
