Naïve American pulp novelist Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) arrives in the morally ambiguous world of divided, crumbling post-war Vienna to take a job from a friend, but is shocked to find that he has been killed in a car accident. Martins suspects foul play and sets out to discover the identity of the “third man,” the mysterious witness to the incident, who is the person he hopes can reveal the true story. Shot in breathtaking black and white, with inky shadows that hide lurking figures, the film climaxes in an unforgettable chase through the labyrinthine underground sewers. Orson Welles, in relatively little screen time, dominates the film as the mesmerizing mystery man Harry Lime. Co-starring Trevor Howard and Alida Valli. Famed novelist Graham Greene adapted the dramatic screenplay from his own story; Carol Reed (Odd Man Out, The Fallen Idol, Oliver!) masterfully directed.
