Filmmaker Anna Rose Holmer’s visually striking debut feature is a delightfully enigmatic coming-of-age story about a young girl’s transition out of childhood and the anxiety around growing up. Quietly self-possessed eleven-year-old tomboy Toni (a showstopping Royalty Hightower) is bewitched by the tight-knit dance team she sees practicing in the same Cincinnati gymnasium where she boxes with her older brother. Attracted by the power and confidence of the strong community of girls, Toni applies to join the dance team, attempting to master the drills and fit in, making new friends. When a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, most of the girls transform these mysterious spasms into a rite of passage. Toni fears “the fits” but is equally afraid of losing her place just as she’s found her footing. Caught between her need for control and her desire for acceptance, Toni must decide how she will embody her new ideals. Shot with dreamy beauty and featuring a mesmerizing score, The Fits is a transformative experience and a marvelous portrait of adolescence.
