Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor) works long hours in brutal isolation on his family’s remote sheep farm in the north of England. He deadens the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and joyless sex with other men. When a handsome Romanian migrant worker (Alec Secareanu) arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. An intense relationship forms between the two which could change Johnny forever, teaching him how to welcome tenderness and vulnerability into his life. At times reminiscent of Brokeback Mountain, God’s Own Country is a unique and powerful story of repression and love. Gemma Jones and Ian Hart co-star. Winner of the Directing Award for World Cinema (Drama) at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as the Audience Award for Best Feature at the Frameline San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival.
