This highly-personal memoir collage by famed cinematographer Kirsten Johnson, who has shot footage in conflict zones for 25 years (Citizenfour, The Oath, Fahrenheit 9/11, Darfur Now, Happy Valley and many more), powerfully examines the relationship and responsibility between the photojournalist and their subjects. What does it mean to film another person? How does it affect that person—and what does it do to the one who films? We see Muslim women testifying to mass rape in the Bosnian war, an overworked Nigerian midwife trying to save a newborn baby that is having trouble breathing, a Texas prosecutor describing the horrendous evidence in the trial for the murder of James Byrd Jr., scenes from the first Penn State football game after the child sexual abuse scandal broke, a scary car ride past a prison in Yemen where terrorists are held when the filmmakers are stopped for questioning, and, most personally, scenes of the filmmaker’s mother ailing with Alzheimer’s. Johnson’s film is extraordinary and deeply poetic, about personal journey, craft and direct human connection. (Partially subtitled)
