The Spy Behind Home Plate is the first feature-length documentary to tell the real story of Morris “Moe” Berg, the enigmatic and brilliant Jewish baseball player turned spy. A major league catcher for 15 years during baseball’s Golden Age in the 1920s and 1930s, Berg was known as the “brainiest guy in baseball,” speaking numerous languages and earning a law degree while playing professional ball. Always fond of travel, he joined Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig on an all-star tour of Japan in 1934. But very few people know that Berg also worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), spying in Europe and playing a vital role in America’s efforts to undermine the German atomic bomb program during WWII. Filmmaker Aviva Kempner (The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, Rosenwald) reveals the amazing life of this unknown Jewish hero through rare historical footage and insightful interviews. Berg may have had only a .243 batting average during his major league career, but the stats he collected for the OSS made him a most valuable player for his country during World War II.
