The whimsical drama Person to Person takes place during a single day in New York City, as a variety of characters grapple with the mundane, the unexpected, and the larger questions permeating their lives. A fanatical music lover hustles for a big score on a rare vintage record, while his heartbroken roommate tries to erase a terrible mistake; a teenager bears witness to her best friend’s new relationship; and a trainee reporter, trying to learn the job on a tabloid newspaper under the eye of her demanding supervisor, chases the clues of a murder case involving a life-weary clock shop owner. Shot entirely in 16mm, Person to Person effortlessly humanizes its characters, invoking an earnest realism in the performances of its ensemble cast: Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”), Philip Baker Hall (Hard Eight), Michaela Watkins and newcomer Bene Coopersmith. With his second feature, writer/director Dustin Guy Defa (Bad Fever) demonstrates his aptitude for honest storytelling as he explores the absurdity and challenges of forging human connections.
