The new film by writer/director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, Mood Indigo) is a delightful tale of two misfit teenage boys taking a road trip in their house-on-wheels powered by a lawnmower motor. Microbe (Ange Dargent) is small for his age (hence the derogatory nickname), a shy aspiring cartoon artist who has trouble making friends at school until he meets Gasoline (Théophile Baquet), a likeminded outcast. Gasoline, so called for his prevailing smell, is a new kid in class with jaunty confidence, a tinkerer who is always fixing engines. They both dream of escaping their drab existences; together they hatch a plan to build a car and spend their summer on an epic road trip across France. The car is a unique contraption, half house/half vehicle, with camouflage to hide its wheels to deflect police attention from their highly unorthodox mode of transport when parked. This ode to the empowering potential of friendship is fresh, sweet and funny. With Audrey Tautou (Amélie). (Fully subtitled)
