Six male acquaintances, semi-buddies ranging in age and class, board a luxury yacht for a fishing trip on the beautiful, sun-drenched Aegean Sea. When the eldest, a doctor, suggests a game of one-upmanship to prove who is the best “in general,” the men enter into the odd contest with enthusiasm, measuring and comparing physical, mental and emotional achievements, their macho competitive spirit coming on strong. At the end of the voyage, when the game is over, the winner will wear the victorious signet ring, the Chevalier. Director/co-writer Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg) brings a refreshing female perspective to the spectacle of rampant male egos and insecurities competing in this sly, intelligent, deadpan comedy. Brilliantly acted by a superb cast, the competitors waver between bullying and vulnerability, comradeship and back-stabbing. The film is filled with all sorts of strange male rituals, suggesting parallels with larger social and political ills. Intriguing, thought-provoking and funny, Chevalier was awarded Best Film at the London Film Festival. (Fully subtitled)
