A startlingly bizarre noir tale reminiscent of Tod Browning’s Freaks, Bleak Street is a true crime story set in a world of prostitution, philanderers and luchador wrestling. Midget twin brothers known as Little Death and Little AK work as shadow mascots for hulking full-sized wrestlers. So dedicated to their roles are they that they refuse to take off their masked wrestling costumes at any time, even for their long-suffering wives. Two aging prostitutes are unsuccessfully looking for business, desperate for money. One has problems at home with her teenage daughter and crossdressing husband, the other lives with her invalid mother and loneliness. But that night, they have a date to celebrate the victory of Little Death and Little AK. At an hourly hotel, in order to rob the tiny men of their earnings, they drug them with eye drops—but the plan goes wrong. Photographed in stunning black-and-white. Directed by Arturo Ripstein (Deep Crimson). (Fully subtitled)
