Heartfelt and delightful, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki tells the true story of 25-year-old Olli Mäki (Jarkko Lahti), the Finnish boxer who had a shot at the 1962 World Featherweight title when he faced American champion Davey Moore (John Bosco Jr.) in a title bout in Helsinki. Immensely talented and equally modest, small town-raised Olli is completely unprepared for the media storm that transforms his life when he is swept into national stardom and suddenly regarded as a symbol of his country. On top of it all, Olli has just fallen in love with the young and beautiful Raija (radiantly played by Oona Airola). Inside of the ring, it’s Finland vs. the USA, but outside—to the dismay of his assertive trainer (Eero Milonoff)—boxing and romance become unlikely adversaries competing for Olli’s attention. Beautifully photographed in naturalistic black and white, this charming feature debut from director/co-writer Juho Kuosmanen was awarded the Un Certain Regard Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. (Fully subtitled)
