Written by poet and screenwriter Jacques Prévert (Port of Shadows, Children of Paradise), the delightful dramatic comedy The Crime of Monsieur Lange is one of the most widely praised, and least seen, masterpieces by director Jean Renoir (Grand Illusion, The Rules of the Game). After Amedée Lange’s (René Lefèvre) maliciously charming boss Batala (Jules Berry, described as “a sublime creation of villainy” by André Bazin) is presumed dead following his flight from debt collectors, Lange, with the assistance of his lover Valentine (Florelle), helps organize a community of workers into a cooperative publishing house for his hit Western serial “Arizona Jim.” But then… Restored in 4K by Studiocanal at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory (Bologna), with new subtitles by Lenny Borger and Bruce Goldstein capturing the wit and spirit of Prévert's dialogue. (Fully subtitled)
