From executive producer Angelina Jolie and Cartoon Saloon, creators of the Academy Award-nominated The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, comes the wonderful new animated feature based on Deborah Ellis’ award-winning novel. The Breadwinner tells the story of Parvana (voice of Saara Chaudry), an 11-year-old girl growing up under the harsh rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. She helps her father Nurullah, a storyteller, in the marketplace in Kabul, but they draw the disapproving attention of a Taliban soldier and Nurullah is arrested. With her family facing starvation, Parvana cuts her hair and dresses as a boy to go out and look for work, risking discovery to try to find out if her father is still alive. Honoring her father, Parvana makes up stories of a magical quest to entertain her little brother, stories that become intertwined with her real life adventures. The gorgeously colored animation is a visual delight. Directed by Nora Twomey, co-director of The Secret of Kells. In English.
