BPM (Beats Per Minute) is set in the early 1990s, when AIDS has already claimed countless lives for nearly ten years. The Paris branch of the activist group ACT UP meets weekly to debate strategy in their fight against government and big pharma indifference, trying to force them to speed up development and distribution of AIDS treatments. Driven by a sense of life-and-death urgency, their tactics include invading posh corporate offices and throwing fake blood over everything. Though frequently disagreeing, the group is a close-knit band of comrades, including radicals, those who favor more conservative approaches, a middle-aged mother of an HIV-positive teenage son, and even one HIV-negative man. Nathan (Arnaud Valois), a shy newcomer to the group, has his world shaken up by outspokenly flamboyant Sean (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart), a radical militant. Funny and erotic at times, BPM is heartbreaking and inspiring, told with riveting urgency. Co-starring Adèle Haenel. Winner of 4 Awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including the Grand Jury Prize. France’s Official Selection for Best Foreign Language Film consideration at the 90th Academy Awards. Directed and co-written by Robin Campillo (Eastern Boys, co-writer of The Class and Time Out). (Fully subtitled)
