At the turn of the 16th century the madly inventive Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch created “The Garden of Earthly Delights” and other diabolically grotesque paintings that still captivate and fascinate us today. In 2016, on the 500th anniversary of his death, his hometown of Den Bosch determined to assemble a special exhibition of most of his 25 still existing paintings, despite not having any themselves. A team of Dutch art historians crisscrossed the globe visiting museums, to study his paintings under magnification and infrared photography revealing the sketches under the paint, trying to unravel their secrets, and to persuade the museums to lend their precious artworks for the exhibition. This revealing documentary provides an unprecedented close-up look at Bosch’s fantastical and utterly unique paintings in which hell and the devil always played a prominent role.
