The Paris Opera, encompassing both music and ballet, turns the spotlight on great passions and reveals the fascinating story of life behind the scenes of one of the most prestigious performing arts venues in the world. Backstage dramas, crises and triumphs play out each night before the curtain rises, amid the whirlwind logistics that are required to put together breathtaking performances. An eager young Russian singer who doesn’t speak any French (yet), crosses paths with Bryn Terfel, one of the greatest voices of his time. Crises abound: Benjamin Millepied, the famed director of the ballet, is considering quitting; the lead singer in Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger” cancels 48 hours before the premiere, causing the office staff to frantically phone singers all over the world trying to find a replacement. For Schönberg’s “Moses and Aaron” it is decided to bring a huge live bull on stage, much to the alarm of the singers sharing the stage with him. Director Jean-Stéphane Bron masterfully constructs a human comedy to rival those performed onstage, in this engaging portrait of one of the world’s great institutions. (Partially subtitled)
