This shaggy-dog tale features celebrated comedian and podcaster Marc Maron as Mel, a philosophical pawnshop owner in small-town Alabama with a not-very-helpful man-child employee Nathaniel (Jon Bass). Cynthia (Jillian Bell) and Mary (Michaela Watkins), a lesbian couple, bring in a Civil War-era sword to sell, Cynthia’s only inheritance from her grandfather, who claimed it proved the South had won the war. Mel makes them a low-ball offer which they reject, but a quick internet search by Nathaniel reveals that the sword could sell for big bucks to the right buyer, and the four band together in an unlikely alliance to pursue a fortune. Their journey takes the ragtag bunch into danger on a tour through the Deep South and into the minds of conspiracy theorists and fans of revisionist history. Created from the raw talent of its able cast and infused with a lot of heart and laughs, Sword of Trust takes a stab at uncovering emotional truths through moments of hilarity and hits right on the mark. Directed by Lynn Shelton (Humpday, Our Sister’s Sister).
