"Something wicked this way comes…." In William Shakespeare’s tragedy of greed, ambition, and lust for power, Macbeth (Christopher Eccleston) and Banquo (Raphael Sowole), generals in the service of King Duncan of Scotland, are returning victorious from battle when they are hailed by three witches on the heath. The witches predict that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and then King Scotland, whereas Banquo’s descendants will be kings. The first part of the prophecy is soon fulfilled when Duncan rewards Macbeth’s loyal service. Encouraged by this, and playing on her husband’s ambition, Lady Macbeth (Niamh Cusack) persuades him to murder Duncan while he is a guest at their castle. Royal Shakespeare Company’s contemporary production of Shakespeare’s darkest psychological thriller, directed by Polly Findlay and recorded live in 2018, marks both Eccleston’s RSC debut and the return of Cusack to the Company. Please note: Macbeth contains sudden blackouts, loud noises and strobe effects.
