Legendary performer Chavela Vargas led a life of passion, scandal, despair and triumph. Born in Costa Rica in 1919, she refused to conform to her family’s idea of gender norms and ran away from home at 14 to Mexico City to sing in the streets. She soon became a singing sensation of ranchera-style ballads, famed for raw passion and a unique voice, dressing in men’s clothes. Chavela was a bold, rebellious sexual pioneer known for having many female lovers (rumored to include Frida Kahlo) at a time when being out in macho Mexico was dangerous. Chavela features unforgettable performance footage, as well as a candid 1991 interview—the singer’s first public appearance after 15 hard years lost to alcoholism and heartbreak. In the final years of her life, Chavela openly came out as a lesbian, becoming a muse to filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, earning a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and selling out performances at prestigious concert halls around the world. Directed by Catherine Gund (Born to Fly: Elizabeth Streib vs. Gravity) and Daresha Kyi. Winner of the Audience and Grand Jury awards for Best Documentary at Outfest Los Angeles. (Partially subtitled)
