The third part of writer/director Marcel Pagnol’s epic love story begins twenty years after the events of Fanny. Her son, Césariot (André Fouché), is in a military academy, and Panisse (Fernand Charpin) is on his deathbed, where the local priest demands that he tell his son about his biological father. Panisse, a doting father, refuses and dies; Fanny (Orane Demazis) then divulges the secret, which sends Césariot on a search for his own identity and for Marius (Pierre Fresnay), whose life has been filled with calamity and poverty. Posing as a journalist Cesariot meets Marius, but leaves with a mistaken impression of his character. It is up to the wiser Fanny, with the help Marius’s father César (Raimu), to resolve their star-crossed destinies. The beloved Marseille trilogy (Marius, Fanny, César), directed by three different filmmakers but governed by Pagnol’s distinctive voice and prescient filmmaking vision, is an unprecedented marriage of cinematic and theatrical techniques that is saturated in piquant Provençal flavor and brimming with some of early cinema’s greatest performances. Glorious 4K digital restoration. (Fully subtitled)
