1945, Leningrad. World War II has devastated the city, demolishing its buildings and leaving its citizens in tatters, physically and spiritually. Although the siege—one of the worst in history—is finally over, life and death continue their battle in the wreckage that remains. Two women, intensely bonded after fighting side by side as anti-aircraft gunners, attempt to readjust to a haunted world. Iya (astounding newcomer Viktoria Miroshnichenko), nicknamed “Beanpole” because she is so tall and skinny that she towers over everyone, is a nurse at a war veterans hospital, caring for traumatized soldiers, and also the loving mother of a small frail boy. Her friend Masha (Vasilisa Perelygina), returning late from the front, is determined to seize life as she can. A shocking accident brings them closer and also seals their fates. The 28-year-old Russian director Kantemir Balagov won Un Certain Regard’s Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival for this richly burnished, devastatingly powerful film that finds hope and healing even in the worst of circumstances. (Fully subtitled)
