Acclaimed British filmmaker Terence Davies (Sunset Song, The Deep Blue Sea, The House of Mirth and Distant Voices, Still Lives) creates a masterful portrait of 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson in this sensitive and lyrical film. Cynthia Nixon (James White, Sex and the City) delivers a triumphant performance personifying the wit, intellectual independence and pathos of the reclusive poet, supported by her close knit family, whose genius only came to be recognized after her death. In this luminous journey into the poet’s universe, Davies creates a formally audacious rendering of Dickinson’s life, from teenage skepticism to lonely death, using her poems (and a touch of Charles Ives) as soundtrack accompaniment. Davies’s witty, Wildean sense of humor, as well as his alarming vision of life’s grim realities, flavor this consuming depiction of a creative inner world. Also starring Jennifer Ehle, Jodhi May, Catherine Bailey, Emma Bell, Duncan Duff and Keith Carradine.
