Inspired by a true story and set in 1953 amid the paranoia of the postwar Soviet occupation of Estonia, The Fencer is a touching drama about a young man who finds meaning in his life through the children who need him. Endel Nelis (Märt Avandi), an Estonian fencing master on the run from the Soviet secret police, leaves Leningrad and hides out in a small Estonian town as sports master at the elementary school. Despite hostility from the principal and lack of equipment, he decides to teach fencing to the enthusiastic young students, who have nothing to do and feel worthless. When the children want to participate in a national fencing tournament in Leningrad, Endel must make a choice: risk everything to take the children to Leningrad or put his safety first and disappoint them. Avandi is excellent as the soft-spoken but determined fencing teacher, and the relationship between the coach and the young students who look up to him (many of them war orphans) is strong and appealing, with unexpectedly beautiful and gripping fencing sequences. Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Film. (Fully subtitled)
