Luchino Visconti’s Senso, which depicts the late stages of the Italian Risorgimento through the lens of a doomed romance between an Italian noblewoman and an Austrian officer, returns in a glorious new digital restoration. Against the backdrop of the Italian-Austrian war of unification, troubled Countess Livia Serpieri (Alida Valli, The Third Man, Suspiria) betrays her country for the love of Austrian rogue Franz Mahler (Farley Granger, Strangers on a Train), a lieutenant in the occupying Austrian army. As her resources dwindle, Livia comes to realize that their love might not be as pure as she thought. In a distinct break from his Neorealist roots, director and co-writer Visconti (Rocco and His Brothers, The Leopard, Death in Venice) employed a grand vision and lush color palette to bring one of Italy’s most consequential historical moments to life. Massimo Girotti co-stars. Restored by Studiocanal, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia-Cineteca Nazionale, and Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata. Restoration funding provided by Gucci, The Film Foundation, and Comitato Italia 150. (Fully subtitled)
