One of the most beautiful and heartfelt of the famed Merchant-Ivory films, Maurice tells the story of the forbidden love between two men amid the stifling conformity of Edwardian England, adapted from the landmark E.M. Forster novel. Youthful Maurice Hall (James Wilby) and Clive Durham (Hugh Grant) find themselves falling in love at Cambridge. In a time when homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment, the two must keep their feelings for each other a complete secret. After a friend is arrested and disgraced for “the unspeakable vice of the Greeks,” Clive abandons his hidden love and seeks a safer path, marrying a young woman. Heartbroken, Maurice continues to struggle with his sense of identity and self-confidence. While staying with Clive and his shallow wife, Maurice discovers a mutual attraction with an affectionate and yearning servant (Rupert Graves), a relationship that brings about profound changes in Maurice's life and outlook. Directed and co-written by James Ivory (The Remains of the Day, A Room with a View, Howards End). New 4K digital restoration for the film’s 30th Anniversary!
