A masterpiece of film noir suspense set to new rhythms and deliciously laced with irony, Elevator to the Gallows follows scheming lovers Florence (Jeanne Moreau) and Julien (Maurice Ronet) as they engineer the “perfect murder” of her husband. But when Julien attempts to tie up one last loose end, he becomes trapped between floors in the title conveyance, with precious minutes ticking away before the police discover the victim’s body. Superbly shot by Henri Decaë, who also lensed the first films of François Truffaut and Claude Chabrol, Elevator to the Gallows was a stunning debut for 24-year-old director Louis Malle (Au Revoir Les Enfants, Murmur of the Heart, My Dinner with Andre). Ushering in the French New Wave, it also made an international super-star of cool beauty Moreau (Jules and Jim), here giving perhaps the most iconic performance of her career. And as seminal as the film itself is its legendary Miles Davis music—still the most famous of all jazz film scores. New 2K digital restoration presented by Gaumont. The image work was carried out by Éclair and the sound was restored by Diapason in partnership with Éclair. (Fully subtitled)
