Filmmaker Letter

Filmmaker Letter

Apples

by director/co-writer Christos Nikou

My name is Christos Nikou. I was born in 1984 in Athens and I have co-written and directed Apples. I would love to call myself a filmmaker but I think that this is a very important label and only time can tell if I deserve it or not. I don't know if I know how to make a film. I believe that even the best “filmmakers” don’t really know how to. They just follow their instincts and try things out, pouring their hearts into the films. And it’s so wonderful when the audience connects with that. I think this is the most important thing and I would hope that it is the goal of every filmmaker.

Maybe I am too naïve. Maybe…

I am still trying to learn how to make films. I didn't go to school for it. My education was just watching three movies per day since forever. If I had a polaroid album with all my memories from the past, most of the photos would be taken outside of a theater, next to a movie poster. That’s how I learned how to make films. So, as a person who is first and foremost a cinephile and is trying to be a “filmmaker,” the only thing I would hope for the movies I co-create is that the audience is moved by them. That they will feel the emotions of the main characters, will laugh, cry, fall into melancholy and will travel alongside them throughout their journey. And maybe at the end, after the end credits roll, they will keep something with them. In their mind. In their memory.

I know that all of the above sounds a bit cliché, but it’s the only sure thing I could tell about my connection with filmmaking.

Lastly, something that will sound even more cliché: please, please stop watching films on your TV and laptop. Please return to theaters and give a chance to be moved in a dark room with other people. Movies belong to theaters; we have to fight for that!

To all the beloved cinephiles of this world,

-Christos Nikou
