Celebrating its 70th anniversary, Robert Hamer's black comedy King Hearts and Coronets, digitally restored in 4K by Studiocanal, remains one of British cinema's most diabolical and subversive films. Poor relation Louis (Dennis Price), ninth in line to the Dukedom of Chalfont, narrates his ascent through the line of succession from his prison cell, coolly describing removing his upper-crust relatives, the D'Ascoynes—including an arrogant playboy, a fussy reverend, a formidable dowager, and five more, all played by Alec Guinness (who requested that the number of characters be increased from three to eight). Louis, faced with execution himself, faces a choice between prim Edith (Valerie Hobson) and sultry Sibella (Joan Greenwood).
