American-born expatriate filmmaker Eugène Green (La Sapienza) exists in his own special artistic orbit. His latest movie, a playful fable of an unhappy teenager seeking his unknown father, is his most adorable and buoyant. A nativity story reboot that gently skewers French cultural pretensions, it features newcomer Victor Ezenfis as Vincent, a sullen Parisian teenager living with his loving single mother Marie (Natacha Régnier), who refuses to disclose the identity of his father. Deviously resourceful, Vincent tracks down an arrogant philandering publisher named Oscar (Mathieu Amalric) as his most likely parental prospect, but it’s the publisher’s unworldly brother Joseph (Fabrizio Rongione) who captures his attention. Vincent’s quest becomes more complicated when he is mistaken for a hot new author by a pretentious critic (Maria de Medeiros). Stuffed with Biblical references and Green’s love for old master paintings (Vincent is alarmingly fascinated by Caravaggio’s “The Sacrifice of Isaac”), this beguiling film is uniquely contemporary and timeless. Co-produced by Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne. (Fully subtitled)
