The intense romantic drama Frantz is set in a small German town just after the end of World War I. Anna (Venice Festival award-winning actress Paula Beer) is a young German woman frozen in grief for her dead fiancé, Frantz, killed in combat; she lives with his aged parents, helping alleviate their grief and despair. When she sees a mysterious young Frenchman laying roses on Frantz’s grave, she is surprised and curious. She learns that the fragile-looking Adrien (Pierre Niney, Yves Saint Laurent) is a pre-war friend of Frantz’s who shares their mourning. While other townsfolk revile him as a murderer of Germans, Frantz’s parents, at first suspicious, welcome him into their home and treasure his stories about their son. But there are hidden secrets that eventually surface as the relationship deepens. Paula Beer is magnetic as Anna, a strong and complex woman, recovering from loss and slowly turning back to embrace life. Filmed mostly in sumptuous black and white, Frantz is written and directed by François Ozon (The New Girlfriend, Swimming Pool, Under the Sand). (Fully subtitled)
