Can common infections in children cause psychiatric symptoms? My Kid is Not Crazy: A Search for Hope in the Face of Misdiagnosis, a documentary film by Emmy-nominated director Tim Sorel, tracks the journey of 6 children who seemingly overnight have a dramatic personality change and develop severe psychiatric symptoms. The families soon discover their children, initially labeled mentally ill, are actually suffering from a treatable autoimmune condition, triggered by strep, that can masquerade as a psychological illness. As their lives unravel, the children and their families seek out answers, only to find themselves entangled in a medical system that is fiercely divided over the condition now known as PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infection. My Kid is Not Crazy features interviews with world-renowned experts to separate fact from fiction and unearth the truth about a disorder that impacts an estimated 1 out of every 200 children in the U.S.
Director Tim Sorel will attend and answer questions after the movie. View the trailer at at https://vimeo.com/159385789
