Albany's award winning Youth FX program will host the world premiere of our 2019 short films on Thursday, April 18th @ 7pm at the Landmark's Spectrum 8 Theatres. The screening will feature short narrative films and documentaries and will be followed by a Q & A with the filmmakers and program directors.
***Please note that our screening is rated PG-13 as some of our films have intense scenes and explore complex and mature issues.
Youth FX is designed to empower young people ages 10-24 by teaching them the technical and creative aspects of digital film making and media production. Based in the City of Albany, NY, we have become a national organization with a primary mission to work with diverse groups of youth from communities that have been historically under-served and in need of opportunities to learn filmmaking and acquire skills in emerging media technologies. Youth FX hands-on programming develops leadership skills, creativity, and critical thinking, through the collaborative and artistic process of making films, amplifying the voices of young people in the capital region of New York State and around the world. Our programs have grown from our 5 week summer intensive year round programming at Albany High School, Albany Public Libraries and community spaces across the capital region. In just three years our NeXt Doc program has grown into a nationally acclaimed fellowship program for documentary filmmakers of color between the age of 20-24. In January 2018, thanks to the City of Albany & Albany Housing Authority, we moved into our new Youth FX Studios at 25 Warren St. where we are now based.
Youth FX primarily works with young people who reside in the South End, Arbor Hill and West Hill neighborhoods of Albany, NY, areas that have been historically under served and in need of meaningful opportunities for training and engagement in new digital media technology. The skills they are learning not only enables them to be more creative and express their ideas, but they are also valuable skills that are in high demand in today’s technology based world. Youth FX participants engage in their communities by creating documentary and short fiction films that reflect their understanding and vision of the world around them.
Youth FX films have been screened and won awards at dozens of film festivals across the country including:
Tribeca Film Festival
San Francisco International Film Festival
Los Angeles Film Festival
Chicago International Film Festival
