Awards season begins in September as the top fall movies receive their very first showings at the Telluride, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals. Join REEL TALK WITH STEPHEN FARBER and see several of these films right after their festival screenings, along with other cutting-edge independent and foreign films. Then meet the filmmakers and stars in revealing discussions after the screenings. Enjoy the extras that make this series the best in town—weekly raffles and possible bonus screenings (FREE to series passholders).

Monday, September 9 at 7pm: PRISONERS is a dramatic thriller about the search for two missing children in a close-knit community. The top-notch cast of Oscar nominees and winners includes Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Paul Dano, and Maria Bello. This is the first American movie from Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, who made the Oscar-nominated foreign film, Incendies. Guest speakers: producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.

Monday, September 16 at 7pm: MUSCLE SHOALS is an eye-opening new music documentary in the tradition of the recent hit, 20 Feet from Stardom. It tells the unlikely story of a recording studio in the heart of Alabama that brought together black and white musicians to create some of the ground-breaking music of recent decades. Interviews with Aretha Franklin, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bono, Alicia Keys, Percy Sledge, and many others enrich the film. Guest speaker: director Greg 'Freddy' Camalier.

Monday, September 30 at 7pm: A.C.O.D. stands for Adult Children of Divorce. In this sharp comedy Adam Scott plays a seemingly well adjusted man whose equilibrium begins to wobble when he is forced to reunite his bitterly divorced parents for his brother's wedding. Richard Jenkins, Catherine O'Hara, Amy Poehler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ken Howard, and Jane Lynch co-star. Guest speaker: producer and co-writer Ben Karlin, who served as head writer and producer of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report." He is currently writer and co-executive producer on "Modern Family."


Wednesday, October 2 at 7pm: CAPITAL is a timely corporate thriller set inside the world of international banking. Gabriel Byrne and Gad Elmaleh star. Special guest speaker: director and co-writer Costa-Gavras, the Oscar-winning director of Z, The Confession, State of Siege, Missing, Music Box, and many other films.
This screening is FREE to series passholders.

Monday, October 7 at 7pm: THE FIFTH ESTATE dramatizes the true story of Julian Assange and the launching of his controversial website, WikiLeaks. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Assange, with a strong supporting cast that includes Daniel Brühl, Stanley Tucci, Laura Linney, and Dan Stevens. Bill Condon, the Oscar-winning director of Gods and Monsters, Kinsey and Dreamgirls, directs. Guest speaker: screenwriter Josh Singer.

Monday, October 14 at 7pm: NEBRASKA, a hit at several recent film festivals, chronicles the road trip undertaken by a difficult father and his estranged son. Bruce Dern and Will Forte star. Guest speaker: Oscar-winning director Alexander Payne, whose earlier credits include Election, About Schmidt, Sideways and The Descendants.

Monday, October 21 at 7pm: SPINNING PLATES is a rousing documentary that chronicles the struggles of three very different American restaurants: a top-chef hot spot in Chicago, a family diner that has operated for more than 100 years in rural Iowa, and a fledgling Mexican restaurant in Tucson, Arizona. The film has already won audience awards at many international film festivals. Guest speaker: writer-director Joseph Levy.

DOUBLE FEATURE, please arrive at 6:30pm:
GREAT EXPECTATIONS is a lavish new version of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, starring Jeremy Irvine, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sally Hawkins. Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Enchanted April) directs.

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB tells the true story of Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician who fought the medical establishment to bring safer, less expensive AIDS drugs into the country during the 1980s. Matthew McConaughey gives a breakthrough, award-caliber performance in the leading role. Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto, and Dennis O’Hare co-star for director Jean-Marc Vallee.
