It's 1982 and a convention of tech nerds are holed up in a rundown hotel for a weekend trying to win a computer chess tournament with their rudimentary and cumbersome state-of-the-art computer programs. They compete to demonstrate their supremacy at artificial intelligence (with frequent crashes), without giving away the secrets of their software. Between rounds of the contest the socially inept computer geniuses make passes at the one girl in their midst. A rebel programmer tries to crash the party, wandering the hotel corridors at night in search of a spare bed. Meanwhile, a couples' encounter group is also meeting at the hotel, engaged in getting in touch with their feelings, and a scheduling conflict arises. Droll and hilarious, Computer Chess is a bizarre and fascinating oddball comedy. Writer/director Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha Ha) shot the film entirely on period video equipment, in black-and-white square format, greatly heightening the nostalgic period flavor. Official Web Site
