On a seemingly idyllic Sicilian island, 20-year-old Filippo (Filippo Pucillo), whose father died at sea, lives with his mother Giuletta (Donatella Finocchiaro) and his grandfather Ernesto (Mimmo Cuticchio), an old-time fisherman who clings to traditional ways, even though their island is being overrun by rich tourists. Seeing the decline of fishing, Giuletta wants to sell the boat and turn their house into tourist accommodation. One day while out fishing the two men encounter a raft of desperate illegal immigrants. Defying the orders of the coast guard, Ernesto obeys the law of the sea and saves a drowning pregnant woman and her son. This creates an agonizing moral dilemma for Filippo and his family that threatens to tear them apart: hide the survivors and endanger their own livelihood, or turn them out as they are legally required to do. Set against the incredible natural beauty of the island, bathed in bright summer sun and crystal clear blue seas, a life-and-death struggle plays out. Directed and co-written by Emanuele Crialese (The Golden Door, Respiro). Winner of 12 international awards, including Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. (Fully subtitled) Official Web Site
